ARTIST STATEMENT
I paint figures and faces. I paint heavy machinery and color.
Figures can express emotions with immediate impact. With machinery it is a little less obvious. When painting the figure I focus mostly on anatomy, color, line and mood. While every person has bones, muscles, skin, thoughts and emotions, everyone is different in the details. These differences inevitably provide me with a challenge. It is this challenge that keeps me returning to the human form. It lends a freshness to the way I work and to the work that I create.
When painting machinery, I focus on the lines, composition and the subject's relation to its surroundings. I see gestures in the shape of machines. I like that they are made of heavy metal. The colors that the metal is painted appeals to me. They are larger than life and they are more powerful than us. While they are not layered with emotion, they are relevant to the figure and in my mind they compliment it.
