ABOUT THE ARTIST
Lisa Shrigley's paintings focus on the human figure. She captures the complexity of character and emotion in the cut of the figure's outline, the weight of the body, and in the textured gradients of light and tone in the skin. Through carefully layered color combinations and palette knife edges, Shrigley reveals the weight of her subject’s solitude. With the absence of a face, or turned away body, she obscures her subjects identity, as if offering them a defense in anonymity. In her paintings there is a sense of continuity without redundancy and spontaneity heaped in detail. Her figures carry strength in their honesty, and power in their vulnerability.
Shrigley received her B.A. from Colby College in 1995 and was the Assistant Director of Arden Gallery in Boston from 1997 to 1999, while attending graduate level courses at Massachusetts College of Art. For the years following, she worked as General Manager for Stickney Associates, an advertising agency specializing in financial clients, while painting portraits on commission. She currently shows at Agora Gallery in New York City, Windemere Gallery in Rockport, Massachusetts and Side Street Gallery in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Lisa Shrigley lives in Rockport, Massachusetts.
